Sawmills FAQs
A Frontier portable sawmill can cut a wide variety of wood species, including softwoods like spruce, pine, and fir, as well as hardwoods such as ash, maple, oak, walnut, and hickory. For extremely hard woods like ebony, pecan, and mahogany, using premium blades like StelliCut or Apex Carbide improves performance. Premium blades and higher horsepower engines make cutting harder woods easier, while standard-power sawmills may cut slower. Do your best to avoid wood with dirt, debris, or metal embedded in it.
The sawhead on a new Frontier portable sawmill comes preassembled, saving you hours of setup time. The log bed and saw carriage go together easily using standard tools and both SAE and metric socket sets. Most customers can complete assembly in a single day. Setup may take longer if you’re adding optional accessories like the mobility towing kit or log bed extensions. Some steps, such as mounting the preassembled sawhead to the carriage frame, may require an extra set of hands due to the weight of the components. Every sawmill includes detailed, fully illustrated assembly instructions. If you need help during assembly, or even once your mill is up and running, our expert sawmill service team is ready to answer your questions.
Absolutely! Many sawyers use portable sawmills for commercial purposes, from custom cutting and woodworking to small-scale lumber production. They’re ideal for milling unique wood species and cutting specialty sizes not found at lumber yards. With the right setup, a portable sawmill can generate consistent income, especially when paired with efficient workflows, reliable log sources, and a market for specialty or local lumber.
Frontier portable sawmills are designed to grow with your needs. The OS23, OS27, OS31, and OS35 cut logs up to 11 feet long out of the box—and you can add 7-foot rail extensions to go even longer. Some customers have built setups over 40 feet! If you're running a towing-equipped model, you can add one 7-foot extension for a mobile cutting capacity of up to 18 feet. The OS18 mills 8' 1" logs standard, with optional 5-foot extensions for added length. Whether you're cutting short timbers or monster logs, Frontier makes it possible.
Blade life depends on the species and condition of the wood you're cutting, but a carbon steel blade typically needs sharpening for every two hours of milling. Watch for signs like rough board surfaces, increased resistance, blade dive, or increased cutting noise. Smoke or burn marks mean the blade is too dull and it’s best to sharpen it before getting to that point to maximize blade life. It’s better to hone a slightly dulled blade than to heavily grind a fully worn one. Retire a blade if you see cracks in the gullet, metal fatigue, or broken teeth, especially after striking rocks, debris, or metal. Regular inspection and sharpening help you get the most from both standard and premium blades.
